By car

By car, my preferred route is from the port of Patras to Gythio or Neapoli, the highway to Corinth and from here to Tripoli. Leave the motorway at Tripoli and take the E961, over the mountains, to Sparta and Gythio or Neapoli.

The alternative is to continue the journey on the E65, at Megalopoli turn onto the new section of the A71 to Sparta. This route is 22 km further, but much faster.

The route on the E961, over the mountains to Sparta, is more scenically impressive!

There are tolls on the highway!

If you have enough time, there are some sights in the Peloponnese that you shouldn’t miss. E.g. Olympia, Mystras, the cave of Diros and Monemvasia!

If you fly to Athens from abroad, you can rent a car at the airport. One alternative route, approximately 449 km, to the ferry port Neapoli, is via Corinth, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Nafplio and Monemvasia. You should plan at least one overnight stay in Nafplio and Monemvasia. The route is a journey through time, from ancient times to modern times!

Distances:

  • Port of Patras – ferry port Gythio approx. 330 km
  • Port of Patras – ferry port Neapoli approx. 400 km
  • Athens airport – Gythio ferry port approx. 307 km
  • Athens airport – Neapoli ferry port approx. 377 km
